Accessibility and Disability

If elected to the guild, elevate YOUR VOICE will fight for:

ACCESSIBILITY SHOULDN'T DEPEND ON YOUR LECTURER

·      Make disability training mandatory.

·      Mandatory disability/accessibility training for teaching staff.

·      Curtin Access Plans.

·      Reasonable adjustments.

·      Neurodiversity.

·      Invisible and fluctuating disabilities.

·      Accessible assessment.

·      Inclusive communication.

·      Accessible learning materials.

·      Students should not have to repeatedly explain or justify needs that have already been formally approved.

MAKE IT MANDATORY IN THE GUILD TOO

·      Make it mandatory for Guild representatives to do disability and accessibility training.

·      Representatives should understand accessibility, Access Plans, reasonable adjustments, neurodiversity and invisible disabilities.

·      Accessibility should be part of how the Guild runs events, advocacy and representation.

ACCESS PLAN ACCOUNTABILITY

·      Make approved adjustments mean something.

·      Clearer pathways when Access Plan adjustments are not properly implemented.

ACCESSIBLE CAMPUS AUDITS

Identify:

·      Inaccessible routes.

·      Broken lifts.

·      Inaccessible classrooms.

·      Seating problems.

·      Accessibility barriers in events.

MAKE EVENTS MORE ACCESSIBLE

·      More daytime events.

·      More all-ages events.

·      Free and low-cost activities.

·      Accessible venues.

·      Online or hybrid participation where it actually works.

·      Clear accessibility information before events.

·      A broader spread of event times and formats.
